Subj: What's new in Sirius version 0.44 (released today, 01/07/87)

New in Sirius version 0.44:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* The Zenith command: The highest point reached in the path of a
celestial body. I.e., what you are used to as "last message read".
(What's in a name? Remember that Sirius is the Dog Star.) This
command ties in to a 2-byte LASTREAD file (no file extension) in
each message subdirectory, just as both Opus and SEAdog use. This
will also make Bob Hartman's RENUM happy: just be sure to use the
"-s" Sirius option (ha) when running it. Note that I do NOT use
the FOUR-byte LASTREAD file that SEAdog 3.82 uses in the netmail
area; we'll see if this causes any problems.
Sirius considers a message to have been "read" only when a
body-display or print command has been issued, whether or not the
actual display/print was interrupted. A "null" message thus is not
considered to have been read just because its header has been
displayed, even though the header constitutes the entire message.
Messages newly created are also NOT considered to have been read
unless they are redisplayed or printed AFTER being saved to disk.
There is NO Sirius tie-in to USER.BBS last-read pointers.
* File existence checks are made for file attaches and file requests:
Sirius beeps if an attached file does not exist, and if a SEAdog
file request/update DOES exist. Such checks are made whenever
file-attach or file-request/update flags are set and when the
"subject" field is doctored.
* Menu compilation logic has been pulled out of Sirius itself and
into its own program, SIRMENU.COM. Sirius will now read SIRIUS.MEN
(Menu ENtries) instead of SIRIUS.MNU.
SIRMENU.COM will "compile" SIRIUS.MN? to produce SIRIUS.MEN. Thus
SIR_MENU.ARC is an optional download, of interest to those of you
who want CUSTOMIZED Sirius menus which, for example:
- allow you to provide a stripped-down Sirius to your callers
via an "outside" facility without compromising overall system
security, while giving them functionality not found in Fido
or Opus (e.g., greater control over message entry)
- allow you to edit previously entered messages remotely
- eliminate menu "stubs" (listed functions not yet implemented)
- eliminate "SEAdog-only" (extended protocol) options
* You should now be able to ask for on-line help "everywhere", i.e.,
even during "string entry", by keying a single question mark
immediately followed by the ENTER key. This doesn't mean that
you'll GET help (:-)), but you can at least ask for it. And if you
write some additional help data yourself, please send it this way.
* Error termination should now return you to the "BBS home directory"
in almost all cases, rather than dropping you into the current
message area. Let me know of any exceptions you encounter.
* Mike Kelleher is using Sirius with his Opus "OREMOTE" package to
give Opus/Fido systems a SEAdog-like file request/update
capability. See OREMOTE.DOC for a good example of a
DOS-parameterized Sirius script.
Note in particular that Sirius allows ANY kind of Fido/Opus/SEAdog
message to be generated on the fly from DOS batch files. Please
send all examples of such Sirius usage to me at 150/1.
